Alcohol rehabilitation centers are fantastic treatment options for persons addicted to alcohol who have gotten to a point where they either want or need help. The quality centers are staffed by professionals that have been thoroughly trained to assist people who want to quit drinking. There are different philosophies in how to approach alcohol rehabilitation. Some rehab centers will focus on the physical aspect of alcoholism, i.e., detox centers. Others will place an emphasis on the psychological while still others will have a spiritual component. Many of your better ones will have a combination of many of these aspects. Choosing the right alcohol rehab center will make a world of difference. To help you make the right decision when considering rehab, we have listed 5 things that most good alcohol rehabilitation centers should have.

a. Qualified and Trained Staff: One of the most important parts of any rehab center is the staff. If the counselors and psychologists are not well trained or qualified to work with alcoholics, then they may not be very effective and your treatment will be subpar.

Choosing to go to rehab can be very difficult for someone that is dealing with an addiction. The last thing that they will need is to be turned off or harmed in any way by staff that does not know what they are doing or how to properly treat addictions. It is important to ask about the staff, particularly about their education and qualifications prior to choosing a rehab facility.

b. A Good Reputation: Only consider alcohol rehabilitation centers that have a positive reputation. It can be easy to dismiss another person’s experience but resist the urge. Always remember where there is smoke, there is likely fire. If you continue to hear negative things about a particular facility, stay away. There are generally other options that will likely be much more effective. Make sure that you explore them and not settle for a negative and potentially harmful experience or situation.

c. Affordable Services: It is not necessary to spend a small fortune in order to stop abusing alcohol. Sure, the celebrities spend tens of thousands of dollars a month to go through rehab. For them the price of privacy and the ability to be treated as normally as possible is worth the expense. Fortunately, most regular people do not have to worry about this. Do your research or have someone help you so that you can find the most affordable, highest quality help that you can.

d. The Ability to Specialize Services: Very good alcohol rehabilitation centers will be able to specialize or adapt their services to their patients. This will involve creating a program that will be able to address that particular person’s needs and issues so that they have the very best chance of getting clean.

e. A Good, Solid Methodology: A good rehab facility will have an effective, treatment methodology that has been proven to work. Along with experience, a successful track record is also very important. For example, many facilities use the 12-step program model because it works. It is important to ensure that what every model or methodology that a potential center is using, has been successful for helping alcoholics get clean.

There are many types of alcohol rehab centers. The different types are designed to reach, support and treat alcoholics at different stages of their addiction. Philosophy or treatment methodology will also account for some variances as well. Rehab centers may take different approaches for different situations. Some of the most common types of alcohol rehab centers include residential, outpatient, detox, inpatient and 12-step programs.

Inpatient alcohol rehab centers are often for individuals who have struggled with alcoholism for a long time and have had trouble getting sober. These people may have tried outpatient and 12-step programs but they were not successful in helping them quit drinking. Therefore, an inpatient program may be a last-ditch effort at finally getting clean. This type of treatment may be in stand-alone building or even a hospital.

Outpatient alcohol rehab centers may be frequented by people who are in the early stages of alcoholism and want to be able to head off the addiction before it gets very serious. There may also be individuals who use outpatient therapies after already completing an inpatient or residential stay and want some follow up support and help so that they don’t start drinking again. Individuals who perhaps cannot afford more intensive treatment may also choose this route. Some times an individual’s jobs insurance may not cover inpatient treatment and therefore they have to make due with what options they do have. Other persons are simply not able to commit more then a few hours a week to rehab and so chose an outpatient program.

Residential programs are similar to inpatient centers though in the former, the atmosphere is a little more lax and provide more of an atmosphere of healing as opposed to intensive treatment. There will likely be counseling and classes but there may not be as much structure as there would be in an inpatient facility.

Detox centers are available for a person who needs to get all traces of alcohol out of their systems. This is often necessary before true rehab can begin. There are a number of facilities that offer these services around the country. However, it is best to go with a licensed medical facility. This is to ensure that nothing goes awry and that you are not putting yourself in danger. It is important to have either a doctor or nurse around who can provide treatment if something goes wrong.

12-step alcohol rehab centers or programs are what many people think of when they think of alcohol rehabilitation. Most people have heard of Alcoholics Anonymous which would be considered the gold standard of treatment for 12-step programs. This form of treatment is very popular and is available in many rehab centers.

As alcohol rehab facilities and the public learn more about alcoholism and who it affects, another group of persons that treatment is currently being targeted towards are teenagers and adolescents. This age group has been identified as one that needs specialized help. As a result, there are more alcohol rehab centers that are opening up specifically for young persons. This can be a really great option for teenagers struggling with alcohol addiction.

Outpatient alcohol rehab programs are designed for individuals who do not require as much structure as those who would be best served in some type of the intensive, inpatient facility. Alcoholics that are enrolled in outpatient centers are mostly those that do not require a great deal of intervention in order to stop drinking. These people may have been forced to by law to enroll in an outpatient program. This may have been because they were caught driving while drinking or some type of event happened at the work place and so that they were court-order to attend outpatient alcohol rehab. Individuals that can’t afford an inpatient stay, may also go this route.

The purpose of outpatient alcohol rehab programs is the same as inpatient treatment and that is to help individuals stop drinking. Many times this will involve some type of counseling so that the underlying cause of the alcoholism can be determined and dealt with. Classes that cover how to stay clean and re-assimilate into one’s live and the world in general way also be offered.

There are a number of different outpatient rehab models. Some will be religious in nature, others will be more psychological and therapeutic. While still others may have a medical or behavioral focus. One of the most common types of outpatient alcohol rehab programs are the 12-step programs. Alcohol Anonymous (A.A.) is the most famous and probably the most modeled. A.A. includes a spiritual aspect and focus that has been used by millions of people around the world to quit drinking, even by those who don’t consider themselves particularly religious.

Some of the services that a person enrolled in this type of rehabilitation program will have available to them are group therapy, individual counseling, education on alcohol and alcoholism, as well as classes and workshops on how to prevent relapsing once a person has gotten clean. Screening for drugs and workshops on various life skills are also pretty commonly offered. Persons will learn how to live clean as well as become a functioning member of one’s family and society. There may also be leads given on pertinent social services in the community that may help an alcoholic or recovering alcoholic get back on their feet.

More and more outpatient rehab centers are becoming increasingly holistic in their approach to helping people become sober. Not only will they now attempt to deal with the physical aspects of alcoholism but also the mental, social and spiritual factors that keep one trapped in addiction. Rehab centers are also starting to look to treat the entire person in an effort to help them get sober.

Again, outpatient alcohol rehab programs are for those individuals that do not require extreme help or intervention to stop drinking. Some times these persons enroll in these programs because they are appointed by the courts to do so. Some event may have happened and they are now required to attend. Other individuals need some help but their addictions are not yet severe and so they opt for an outpatient programs. For other individuals, this type of treatment is all that they can afford or available to them.

Outpatient rehab can offer a ton of support and assistance to individuals that are trying to stop drinking. Many offer a good number of services and resources that can provide alcoholics the tools that they need to get sober.

Inpatient alcohol rehab is an intensive treatment model. Persons that enroll in this type of program and/or center will actually be living at the facility for certain period of time. This amount of time will differ based on their particular needs and level of addiction. Most will stay for at least one month with others, up to a year. These types of a rehab centers will offer a variety of services including medical detox which in many cases is the first level of treatment.

Individuals aren’t able to deal with psychological, emotional or spiritual aspects of addiction until their bodies can be free of most traces of alcohol. This is exactly what a medical detox will accomplish. Sometimes individuals will be given medications so that the withdrawal symptoms are not so severe.

The physical level of addiction will differ from person to person. Some people are severely addicted and their body will react violently when they stop drinking. These are the people that will need some type of medical intervention or some type of medication to help them get through the process.

Many people would be surprised that alcohol and all traces of it can be cleared from the body in only about a week though perhaps not its’ effects. For example, persons who have cirrhosis of the liver as a byproducts of long term alcohol use will still experience its’ effects. However, in terms of the alcohol actually being eliminated out of the body, this can occur in about 7 days. Believe it or not, but this is the easier part of overcoming the addiction. Often times, the more difficult parts to overcome are the psychological and emotional ties to drinking.

There are many advantages of inpatient alcohol rehab. One of the first is that an individual is able to get away from negative influences. If they have drinking buddies or family members that they drink alcohol with on a constant and consistent basis, getting away from them can be a huge help. This is because the peer pressure to drink will no longer exist, at leas for a period of time. They also will likely have fewer stressors. Some people tend to drink when they feel overwhelmed and have a lot of ongoing responsibility. By getting away from everything and everybody, they have a chance to relax and focus on getting better. Inpatient alcohol rehab centers also tend to have a lot of structure. This can be very beneficial for some individuals as they attempt to stop drinking.

Once a person has gone through detoxification, the staff will create a program especially for that person that will be based on their particular needs, how long they have been drinking and what their struggles are. There may be medical exams, counseling sessions, psychological exams, group and individual therapy. Individuals will learn how to live soberly, how to prevent relapsing and how to get their life back in orderAn inpatient alcohol rehab facility will provide a lot of necessary services to help individuals stop drinking. Subsequently, they can be very important to the long term success of a recovering alcoholic.
