Alcohol rehabilitation centers are fantastic treatment options for persons addicted to alcohol who have gotten to a point where they either want or need help. The quality centers are staffed by professionals that have been thoroughly trained to assist people who want to quit drinking. There are different philosophies in how to approach alcohol rehabilitation. Some rehab centers will focus on the physical aspect of alcoholism, i.e., detox centers. Others will place an emphasis on the psychological while still others will have a spiritual component. Many of your better ones will have a combination of many of these aspects. Choosing the right alcohol rehab center will make a world of difference. To help you make the right decision when considering rehab, we have listed 5 things that most good alcohol rehabilitation centers should have.

a. Qualified and Trained Staff: One of the most important parts of any rehab center is the staff. If the counselors and psychologists are not well trained or qualified to work with alcoholics, then they may not be very effective and your treatment will be subpar.

Choosing to go to rehab can be very difficult for someone that is dealing with an addiction. The last thing that they will need is to be turned off or harmed in any way by staff that does not know what they are doing or how to properly treat addictions. It is important to ask about the staff, particularly about their education and qualifications prior to choosing a rehab facility.

b. A Good Reputation: Only consider alcohol rehabilitation centers that have a positive reputation. It can be easy to dismiss another person’s experience but resist the urge. Always remember where there is smoke, there is likely fire. If you continue to hear negative things about a particular facility, stay away. There are generally other options that will likely be much more effective. Make sure that you explore them and not settle for a negative and potentially harmful experience or situation.

c. Affordable Services: It is not necessary to spend a small fortune in order to stop abusing alcohol. Sure, the celebrities spend tens of thousands of dollars a month to go through rehab. For them the price of privacy and the ability to be treated as normally as possible is worth the expense. Fortunately, most regular people do not have to worry about this. Do your research or have someone help you so that you can find the most affordable, highest quality help that you can.

d. The Ability to Specialize Services: Very good alcohol rehabilitation centers will be able to specialize or adapt their services to their patients. This will involve creating a program that will be able to address that particular person’s needs and issues so that they have the very best chance of getting clean.

e. A Good, Solid Methodology: A good rehab facility will have an effective, treatment methodology that has been proven to work. Along with experience, a successful track record is also very important. For example, many facilities use the 12-step program model because it works. It is important to ensure that what every model or methodology that a potential center is using, has been successful for helping alcoholics get clean.

In this article we will discuss the effects of alcohol, specifically how its’ abuse affects the body, personal relationships and mind. Alcohol abuse can be very hard on the body. For example, most people are familiar with a connection between alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver. However, the damage does not stop here. Alcohol can damage the brain. People who abuse alcohol can have slurred speech, trouble walking, slow and impaired reaction times and may have difficulty remembering things. This is all due to the impact of alcohol on the brain. Individuals that drink too much may also have higher incidences of contracting certain types of cancer. The things listed above are just the physical damages that can occur due to alcoholic abuse. The effects are broader then what are listed here.

Alcoholism can also do a ton of damage to one’s personal relationships including destroying ties with an individual’s family and friends. Often times, when people drink too much, they tend to lie, and act deceptively often times to hide the amount of alcohol that they are actually consuming. This can lead to distrust and a break down in relationships. If a person is always inebriated, this can also make it more difficult maintain any type of relationship or to even communicate with that individual. This can further put strain on one’s relationships.

Alcohol affects people differently. Some people will become violent and mean spirited while others are quiet, docile and may simply sleep all day. While the range of behaviors that may occur when one is under the influence will vary, most will have a negative impact and strain important relationships.

Lastly, we will take a look at some of psychological effects of alcoholism. Some people become paranoid and withdraw. Other people may feel rage, constant pangs of guilt, struggle with depression and anxiety. All of these will have a major impact on the alcoholic and subsequently their relationships with others.

The effects of the abuse of alcohol are varied and far-reaching. Drinking too much will negatively impact the body. People can develop cirrhosis of the liver, various cancers and may even develop brain damage. In the short term, people may have trouble speaking, difficulty remembering things. Their balance may be off. This may be due to alcohols impact on the brain.

Lastly and just as important as the above listed effects, are the relationships that are often damaged when a person is an alcoholic. A lot of times, individuals, especially those that have family and friends that care about them, may attempt to hide their addictions and how much they are drinking as not to disappoint those that believe in them. As a result, this may breed distrust between the person who is drinking and those that desperately want them to stop. These relationships will likely continue to suffer and fracture until the person stops drinking. Rehab will often be necessary. Some people will be able to quit cold turkey or slowly give up drinking on their own. However this won’t be the case for everyone. Millions of people enter some form of rehab with many of these programs being very effective in helping them get sober.

Alcohol abuse rehab is available for individuals who need help quitting drinking. Many times people will attempt to quit on their own but are for different reasons, unsuccessful. Once they get to a point or their loved ones convince them that they have a big enough problem that requires outside help, they may come to rehab. Alcohol rehab can take several different forms. There are a variety of different types. Some of the most common ones include inpatient and outpatient and 12-step alcohol abuse rehab programs. In this article, we will talk about these 3 primary types.

An inpatient alcohol rehab center will allow individuals struggling with alcoholism to live at the facility for a set amount of time or until they get clean. Generally it is the latter. The center will offer all types of counseling, including individual and group sessions. There are often classes given on the effects of alcoholism, reconciling with family, as well as what and who to avoid in order to stay sober. Inpatient alcohol abuse rehab is generally pretty expensive because it does require that the facility cover the costs of not only the individual’s treatment but also their stay which will include room and board.

Inpatient rehab facilities may also offer medical detoxification. This is a medically supervised program that helps individuals get all traces of alcohol out of their systems. Persons who have become physically addictive to alcohol will have some very serious and often severe withdrawal symptoms which may include but are not limited to, convulsions, nausea and throwing up. Therefore, it will be necessary for a doctor or nurse to be around. Medication is sometimes administered during this process in order to decrease the severity of the withdrawal symptoms. As a result, a physician or nurse will need to be around to monitor the situation and make sure that nothing goes wrong.

Outpatient programs are another option for rehab. These involve the alcoholic visiting the facility each week or in pre-determined intervals and going through counseling, taking classes or sitting in or workshops. Persons who choose outpatient services often times may just be beginning to have problems with alcohol or they may have already gone through more intense treatment and are just following up to make sure that they stay alcohol free.

12 Step programs are a very popular form of treatment. They can be stand-alone rehab programs or they can be part of an outpatient or inpatient program. If it is a stand-alone program a person may meet for 12-step meetings weekly where they may discuss who they are, how long they have struggled with alcoholism and whatever else they may want to share. They will also be able to sit in and listen to others.

All three of these (inpatient, outpatient and 12-step programs) can be very effective in helping people get sober. The particular program that a person chooses will depend on what they can afford, what their insurance covers and how bad their addiction is. For example, a person with a severe addiction may be best served with inpatient treatment.
